25 March 2016 - Friday Update II

Once again if you didn't catch it yet: From Earth is now available for download on Steam. Check it out here.

Today's 0.1.7.12 update includes the following fixes:

  • Fixed Submissive title not showing up
  • Uniform model for Anthony
  • Fixed missing models from hospital
  • Fixed incorrect Frank model in c1f2_anthony
  • Replaced hl2 placeholder models
  • Remove +drop input key
  • Possible fix for problems with PDA not sometimes rendering correctly
  • Added glowing cord to the doors in second floor of c1m4_hospital
  • Doctor in hospital wont man the monitor if the player is a pacifist
Some of the items listed are fixes to problems people have been having in c1m4_hospital, though the map still needs improvement. You will need to restart the map for these changes to take effect.

Localization

We have had a bunch of people interested in helping us with localization. We can add support for all the same languages HL2 had. That is: Brazilian, Bulgarian, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian,Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, and Turkish.

The UI should be priority, while the closed captions are secondary. To start translating From Earth to your chosen language first go to C:\Steam\SteamApps\common\From Earth\fromearth\resource (might depend on your Steam installation). Here you should find the three localization files for the language you are interested to translate the game into. gameui_X.txt has most of it already translated, but it has some lines added to it that need to be translated. fromearth_X.txt has majority of the UI stuff. closecaption_X.txt has all the subtitles.

The files that have not yet been translated should include the line for the translatable line as well as a copy with the [english] tag under it.
"FE_GameIncomplete" "Peli pitää aloittaa oikeasta kentistä Saavatuksia varten."
"[english]FE_GameIncomplete"	"Game not started from the right map for achievements."
Do not remove the English line. It should remain there for future reference.

Some people have reported that they have had trouble viewing their changes in-game. You need to change your Steam language settings to your language. If the game still wont show the UI using the language, you can try renaming the files to fromearth_X.txt and gameui_txt. With the closed captions you need to also compile the with the captioncompiler.exe. This is not necessary for you to two unless you want to preview your work in-game. You can find captioncompiler.exe in C:\Steam\SteamApps\common\From Earth\bin.

To launch it use go to Windows start menu. Write cmd.exe in the "Search programs and files". Select it from the list. Write "cd C:\Steam\SteamApps\common\From Earth\bin". If your installation is not in the C drive you need to change the drive first by writing in the letter of the drive followed by colon. Finally in the folder write in:
captioncompiler.exe -game "C:\Steam\SteamApps\common\From Earth\fromearth"
"C:\Steam\SteamApps\common\From Earth\fromearth\resource\closecaption_X.txt"
(Which should all be in the same line).

Also, if you start translating the game, post about it in the From Earth Steam forums. We have had some cases with several people translating the game to Russian at the same time. If there are several people interested in translating to the same language we could use the Steam forums to organize who translates what (there is a lot to translate). Keep posting your progress so we know if it's still going on.
